The Joel Monte West Club Scholarship
About the Scholarship: The Joel Monte West Club Scholarship is a new academic scholarship program managed
and endowed by the Phoenix Chapter of the Louisiana State University Alumni Association. The scholarship will be given to
one Arizona high school student each year who attends Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It will
provide $500 per year -- awarded in the Fall. The scholarship was first given out in the Fall of 2008. The major fundraiser
for this scholarship is our annual Great Cajun Cook-Off.
About Joel Monte West: Joel Monte West was the son of Don West, an active LSU alumnus here in the Valley.
In 1987, as a young LSU art student, Joel's life ended tragically in a car accident. Here are a few samples of Joel's

Scholarship Eligibility: To qualify for the scholarship, a recipient must meet standard LSU admissions:
- Have an established residence in the Phoenix metro area. If no student from the Phoenix metro area is
qualified, the club will consider a student from the state of Arizona. If no student is qualified from the state of Arizona, a
Louisiana resident who meets the LSU Alumni Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship requirements will be selected.
- Have been accepted by and enrolled in Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge as a full-time student
at the undergraduate level. (You do not have to be a Freshman.)
- Have earned a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale in high school courses and a score of
on the ACT or equivalent SAT of at least the minimum required for admission. (Or the equivalent as a current LSU student.)
- Meet other requirements consistent with LSU policy. For more information on this, please visit the LSU

Application: To apply for the Joel Monte West Club Scholarship,
please complete our application form
and mail it in to the address on the application by March 1st of the year the student will
be entering LSU as a student. For example, if the student will be entering LSU in the Fall of 2009, please submit the form
before March 1, 2009. The LSU Alumni, Phoenix Board will make a decision within two weeks of that date, and all applicants
will be notified immediately. Decisions are required by LSU no later than March 15.
** For those starting LSU in 2010/11, applications must be faxed to Bryan Fox by Friday, April 30th, a
decision will be made and applicants will be notified by May 14th
